Puppy Care
Care tips for Maltese & Shih Tzu puppies
Maltese and Shih Tzus are small, delicate breeds that require thoughtful daily care:
01Joint & Bone Health
Both breeds are prone to luxating patella (knee issues), so it’s important to limit excessive jumping or running, especially on hard surfaces. Maltese puppies have particularly fine and fragile bones—never leave them unattended on elevated surfaces like sofas or beds, as falls can easily lead to fractures.
02Nutrition
Small breeds should be fed high-quality kibble formulated for toy or small breeds. Small kibble size makes chewing easier and supports dental health.
03Grooming
Both Maltese and Shih Tzus are considered high-maintenance breeds. Their coats require regular grooming to stay clean and mat-free.
04Eye Care
Tear staining is common, especially in Maltese. Their eyes may continue to develop and grow until about 2 years old, during which time they may tear frequently. We recommend daily wiping of the eye area with a gentle cloth or pet-safe wipes to prevent staining and irritation.
05General Wellness
Consistent grooming, proper diet, and a safe environment will help your puppy grow up happy, healthy, and beautiful.
